Tonkon Torp is proud to announce that partner Danny Newman is one of the American Bankruptcy Institute’s (ABI) 2024 40 Under 40 award recipients. The ABI’s 40 Under 40 program recognizes and honors 40 individuals under the age of 40 who demonstrate remarkable ability, leadership, and achievement in the bankruptcy and insolvency community. The honorees are selected by a group of experienced insolvency professionals based on their professional achievements and service.

As a partner in Tonkon Torp’s Litigation Department, Newman’s work is focused on bankruptcy, reorganization, and insolvency. He also serves as Co-Chair of the firm’s Government Law & Disputes Practice Group. Newman has worked on some of the largest chapter 11 cases in the Pacific Northwest over the past few years and has represented debtors, receivers, and creditors of all kinds in state court litigation and out-of-court workouts.

Newman is a lead member of the NW Bankruptcy Institute Planning Committee and presents annually at the Institute on Ninth Circuit case updates. He also regularly presents on case updates to the Oregon State Bar and is a regular contributor to the Oregon State Bar’s Debtor-Creditor Newsletter. In the past two years, among other things, Newman has been lead counsel to the ad hoc committee of Loan Account Holders in the BlockFi Inc. bankruptcy cases in New Jersey and lead counsel to the receiver over Mark Hemstreet’s personal property, including The Shilo Inn Hotel chain.

Tim Conway, Chair of Tonkon Torp’s Bankruptcy & Reorganization Practice Group, commented, “Danny is a uniquely talented bankruptcy attorney just entering his prime – he is adept in his understanding of the issues and excels at smart, insightful, and creative legal solutions. I couldn’t be more proud to have Danny in our Bankruptcy Group and firm and am confident that he will continue to have a significant, growing impact on the bankruptcy community.”

Founded in 1982, the ABI is the nation’s largest association of bankruptcy professionals, made up of nearly 10,000 members in multi-disciplinary roles, including attorneys, auctioneers, bankers, judges, lenders, professors, turnaround specialists, and accountants.

Newman and his 40 Under 40 cohorts will be celebrated at the ABI’s Winter Leadership Conference in Scottsdale, Arizona, December 12-14.
